Data and Advanced Analytics: Taking the Organization to New Heights
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 1:00 pm - 1:30 pmLocation: Kierland 1C
It is heard over and over, we have all this data, now what should we do with it? Moving from raw data to valuable insight is not an easy journey. Having the right data is one thing, making sure it is clean, consistent and normalized, is quite another. Next there is the conversation of data relevance, relation to other data and most importantly, the question of "what problem am I trying to solve or insight to be gained?" So often big answers lie right beneath the surface just waiting for the question to be asked. Over the years, the data conversation has evolved, the solutions have changed and the technology has improved. This session will feature one of the thought leaders on the topic who will speak from a technical and business perspective.

Enterprise Architecture: Creating the Digital Infrastructure for Organizational Convergence
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 2:00 pm - 2:45 pmLocation: Kierland 1C
Acquiring, leasing, managing and owning Real Estate involves many moving parts. From the due diligence involved in transactions, to the leasing process and accounting processes to all the way down to the smallest detail of a maintenance request, there are an inordinate amount of systems which generate troves of data on a daily basis. Bringing all these processes together in an integrated enterprise is a daunting task. Single stack, best of breed, open APIs, and data warehouses are just a few of the technology decisions required. This session brings together leading domain experts to discuss and debate what a modern real estate digital enterprise architecture should look like.

Building an Effective Cyber Strategy: Balancing Risk and Budget
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 2:15 pm - 3:00 pmLocation: Marshall's Outpost
Although the commercial real estate industry has not been a part of the most infamous cyber breach headlines, there is still much at stake. All of the numerous information systems that are required to operate a portfolio of buildings contain a wide variety of important and sensitive information. Whether it is theft of important tenant data or a fraudulent wire transfer phishing scam, the risks abound. Every commercial real estate organization must have a comprehensive cyber security strategy. System assessment, risk discovery, mitigation as well as an ongoing operational plan are all part of an overall strategy. This session will bring together experienced real estate practitioners who are also thought leaders in the realm of cybersecurity.

The Ever-Present Cyber Threat: Ransomware
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 2:15 pm - 3:00 pmLocation: Kierland 1A
There are many different types of cyber attacks. They include data theft, business disruption, financial theft, reputational harm, physical damage and the ever-changing ransomware attack. We have seen hospitals shut down, accounting systems (AP & AR) and pipelines halted all through the use of ransomware. The process is simple: inject code that collects, organizes and encrypts critical computer code and the world stops until the ransom is paid. The real estate industry has seen attacks on both the enterprise side (back office) and building (tenant facing) side of the business. Hotel rooms locked during peak season, office building systems (including the elevators) disabled, and enterprise applications required to manage a building shut down. This session will focus on ransomware issues pertinent to the real estate industry.

Powering the Enterprise: The Importance of Developing a Modern, Comprehensive Data Strategy
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 3:45 pm - 4:30 pmLocation: Kierland 1C
The number of different applications that are required to run a commercial real estate operation is significant. Accounting, property management, lease process automation, general business administration, the list goes on and on. It gets bigger when you add in building applications such as work order management, access control, surveillance, energy management and more. All of these applications contain mountains of data that in most cases have relationships with each other. Without a master plan or a comprehensive data strategy, organizations will find themselves disorganized and uncompetitive. Identifying best practices and sharing insight on how to develop a modern data strategy will be the focus of this session.

Times of Crisis Spark Innovation: IT Lessons Learned from the Pandemic
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 5:00 pm - 5:45 pmLocation: Kierland 1B
Digital transformation can mean many things to many people. This holds especially true for real estate organizations. With that being said, the pandemic acted like an accelerant and forced people to consider work style adjustments which would have naturally taken years. Work from home, distributed work forces, hybrid environments, remote building operations, expansion of cyber polices to include non-traditional environments, realization of inefficient energy consumption and waste and true realization of already low space utilization rates exacerbated by the pandemic were just some of the lessons learned. This session brings together leaders that took advantage of the Pandemic and moved forward at lightning speed.

Expanding Your Data Horizons: Harnessing the Power of External Data Sources
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 5:00 pm - 5:45 pmLocation: Merriam
In addition to the treasure trove of processes and data found within a commercial real estate organization, there are a large number of growing external data sources that firms require in order to operate a competitive company. Comparable sales, leasing transactions, comparative energy consumption, sustainability ranking, transportation data and even weather information all play into the successful management of a real estate asset. Identifying good data sources, understanding their technical structure, defining relationships with both internal and external sources and ultimately developing an effective communication format for effective decision making - all are critical to the success of integrating external data into an overall strategy.

Investment Management Solutions: Effectively Connecting the Back & Front Offices
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 10:30 am - 11:15 amLocation: Lowell
When an investor calls to discuss their portfolio, investment opportunities or their latest distributions, investment managers rely on their enterprise solutions to provide accurate information in a way that is easy to interpret. They dont want to log into a complex accounting system, open a spreadsheet with dozens of tabs and referential links, or run to their accounting team member for assistance. Todays investment management solutions effectively integrate back-office accounting functions with at-a-glance portfolio information that allow those conversations to happen in real-time. This session will explore several solutions that provide this capability using internal systems and 3rd-party integrations. Attendees will hear how vendors are responding to their client demands and new capabilities that are on the horizon.

Low-Code, No-Code Development: A Framework for the Future of Programming
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 1:30 pm - 2:00 pmLocation: Lowell
When the first lines of code were written they were basic, yet complex strings of instructions designed to automate some type of process. Over the years, each and every new generation of programmers looks to make the process of designing sophisticated applications easier, faster, more accurate and less expensive. In its simplest form, Low-Code, No-Code development involves automating the process of automating. Instead of requiring programmers to write line by line, they are allowed to string together prewritten code performing complex processes in a more user friendly and graphically intuitive environment. In a time when automating old processes is key to success, learning more about this evolving framework is critical for success.

Why PropTech Doesn't Work for Multifamily
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 1:00 pm - 1:45 pmLocation: Kierland 1A
Separating the truth from hype in PropTech is not an easy task. In the past five years, several PropTech applications have hit the market focused on multifamily. Now, property and asset managers all over the country are scrambling to buy products they know little about and try to implement them. The problem is, much of the time, the applications dont work! It is not because the technologies, or the companies that make and support them are bad. It is because most multifamily properties do not have a secure, reliable, accessible infrastructure to make them work and keep them working. This session defines what it takes from a core infrastructure and ongoing support to make all your investments in multifamily PropTech pay off.

Smarter Building Operations: Leveraging Data, Analytics, AI and Machine Learning
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 2:00 pm - 2:45 pmLocation: Kierland 1A
As more systems found in buildings become smart, they produce prodigious amounts of data. Building devices such as HVAC, lighting, access, surveillance, parking, and other non-traditional BAS systems now come with more local intelligence capable of capturing and performing local data operations 'at the edge. With the high volume of data being generated by building automation systems, it has become apparent that new tools are needed to manage this deluge of information. The introduction of more IoT devices in buildings adds an even more granular degree of smart building information, making the task of managing data volume and finding real insight more challenging. Plus, with the rich sets of tools now available to any building owner, it is very possible to apply AI and Machine Learning to these operational data sets to gain valuable insights. This session brings together key industry leaders to discuss the possibilities as well as the challenges.

Todays In-Building Wired and Wireless Landscape: Developing a Comprehensive Strategy
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 3:30 pm - 4:15 pmLocation: Kierland 1A
In the not too distant past, building owners and operators concentrated mostly on copper wire telecommunications with some focus on 802.11 (WiFi). For the most part, they let carriers worry about making sure cell phones worked in buildings, unless it was a high density, high profile project, then they tended to get more involved. With the advent of new wireless technologies and spectrum, building owners and operators now have the opportunity to significantly enhance the efficiency of operations through smart building applications and to drive new occupant experiences. For any building owner or operator to keep their building relevant and competitive, they cannot ignore the need for a sophisticated telecommunications strategy which will be the focus of this session.

The Low Voltage Building: The Holy Grail of Sustainability
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 4:00 pm - 4:30 pmLocation: Merriam
There are many smart building technologies that can help improve the energy efficiency of a building and drive sustainability goals. Sensors, analytics and integrated systems can manage a building with a great deal of precision which can significantly decrease waste. These are notable goals for sure, but the holy grail of reducing carbon in buildings is the low voltage building. The conversation has been ongoing for the last 10 years with only edge projects resulting in no mainstream adoption. The idea of using renewable energy in an old AC infrastructure makes no sense. Learn about the possibilities of delivering Power over Ethernet (PoE) from one of the leading-edge examples in the built environment, the Sinclair Ft. Worth.

IoT at the Edge: Transforming the Smart Building Conversation
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 4:00 pm - 4:45 pmLocation: Kierland 1B
The smart building conversation started long ago. It began with disparate, single system, single vendor solutions, then progressed to the current state of integrated, interoperable, IT centric and is now moving to the smart IoT device, edge and cloud solution. There has been much debate about a smart device to the cloud approach which is efficient in some ways and counterproductive in others. There are more and more conversations on the idea of smart edge devices that can provide a gateway to the cloud but can also keep a majority of the data flowing locally within the building. Understanding what happens at the device-level, what data stays in the building and what goes to the cloud, is at the center of this important and timely discussion.

Establishing an Intelligent Network Strategy: The Foundation of a Smart Building
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 11:30 am - 12:15 pmLocation: Kierland 1C
Establishing an Intelligent Network Strategy: The Foundation of a Smart Building Before data can flow or systems can talk to each other, it is required to establish a sound and comprehensive network infrastructure strategy. We have been building communications networks for business enterprises and the internet for multiple decades and only in the last 10 years has the idea reached buildings. A building is composed of many different systems and the need for a common network seems almost too simple, yet it is still not commonplace. Whether it is traditional Active Ethernet or the less common yet growing Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON), building networks are here to stay. Segmented or converged networks or architecture are just a few of the issues up for discussion.

Developing a Comprehensive Cyber Program: Lessons Learned
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 1:30 pm - 2:00 pmLocation: Kierland 1C
There has been a small group within the Realcomm community that has long realized that cybersecurity for the built environment would become an ever-increasing challenge. Headlines over the past few years have proven this assumption correct and things are not going to get easier. The Real Estate Cyber Consortium (RECC) which was spawned from a Realcomm Cyber Forum five years ago has been working tirelessly to stay ahead of this conversation. One of the most foundational first steps is the creation of a comprehensive cyber program which entails a thoughtful and strategic approach to building a cyber program focused on operational technologies. Sean Nealon, an RECC Executive Committee member, shares his experience as a CISO at Brookfield Properties.

The Missing Link: Integrating Building Science with Data Science
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 1:30 pm - 2:00 pmLocation: Merriam
The tools and technologies available today enable building owners of new and existing buildings to reach zero energy consumption and healthy indoor air quality without spending a premium in construction costs. Evidence-based building performance is becoming table stakes in the achievement of resilient and sustainable building performance. Enlightened building owners understand that achieving a buildings financial, social and environmental goals requires leveraging both building science and data science. Simulation is the missing link that provides physics-based context to assess and manage building performance over the life of the building. By integrating modeling and simulation with a traditional digital twin, we can assess a buildings performance against its potential and not simply against its history or other comparable buildings. In this session, we explore why an integrated digital twin answers the question, Did I get what I paid for?

Smart Building Visionaries: Assembling a Successful Project Team
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 2:15 pm - 3:00 pmLocation: Kierland 1A
A smart building can mean different things to different people. Some may look at it from an HVAC perspective or from a lighting or access control and yet others, may focus on an enhanced occupant experience. The right answer is a smart building is all of the above. It is one thing to understand this from a technology point of view and another to understand the importance of aligning all parts of the organization required for a successful project. When you begin to blend and integrate Information Technologies (IT) and Operational Technologies (OT) you need to span multiple departments which all need to have a seat at the strategy table. This session will bring together industry leaders to discuss how to assemble a successful smart building team.

The NextGen Building Operating System: Picking the Right Solution Set
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 2:15 pm - 3:00 pmLocation: Kierland 1C
In a world dominated by proprietary solutions, there was never a need to choose a building operating system." Similar computers went from single vendor, single solutions to a more open and interoperable world of multiple vendors, so did the building systems industry. With the advent of hundreds, if not thousands, of unique systems ranging from parking to surveillance, there is a need for a base operating system to connect these numerous devices, allow data to flow freely between them and autonomous interaction to occur. While there are many claims of this type of operating system the debate rages on. This session will focus on those systems that could seemingly provide this functionality as well as examining both strengths and weaknesses.

Navigating the Post-Pandemic Working Models: NextGen Hybrid Opportunities
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 1:00 pm - 1:30 pmLocation: Merriam
Coworking companies have accelerated the evolution of the flexible workplace focusing on density, efficiency and experience, even before the pandemic began. Now, many professionals are not planning on being back in the office five days a week, so the question is, "which tools and strategies (e.g. occupancy analytics) are available for data-driven, agile workplace design?" Also, how can flexible environments, dynamic office designs and technology facilitate a successful hybrid workplace strategy? The final issue which will be addressed in this very relevant and timely presentation will be, "which technologies are needed to create a company culture and compelling experiences that support both in-office and mobile workers?"

Navigating CRE Tech & Innovation: Leading Our Organizations in These Uncharted Times
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 3:45 pm - 4:30 pmLocation: Lowell
The pandemic is undoubtedly the biggest global disruptor in modern times. Some of the most visionary real estate leaders realized that COVID acted as an accelerant to the "already in motion" digital transformation shift. Creating a highly resilient, data-driven, real-time organizational culture that could provide highly efficient insight at a moments notice would prove to be the future of transacting, owning and operating buildings. In this session, we look at how the combination of digital disruption, the great resignation, the pandemic, and shifting priorities of the workforce have exposed a fundamental shortcoming of leadership, and how leaders can more effectively manage those challenges by shifting their mindset and facing their own vulnerability.

A Data-Driven Approach to Sustainable Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 5:00 pm - 5:45 pmLocation: Marshall's Outpost
Outside of a few largely unchanging codes and standards, indoor air quality (IAQ) has been mostly invisible to facility managers, designers, decision-makers and occupants. This is changing rapidly on the technology side, however, with advances in sensors, monitoring solutions, analytics, algorithms, and a new generation of standards. Adding to that is a higher demand from greater public awareness, with occupants of buildings increasingly interested in IAQ, especially the health and safety of shared spaces. This panel explores the data behind indoor air quality and how it can be used to monitor and measure IAQ and make informed improvements, verify performance, and communicate with the users and stakeholders of the built environments.

COVID Tech Briefings: Biometric Scanners, IAQ Platforms, UV-C Robots, BPI and More
Date: 11/2/2021Time: 5:00 pm - 5:45 pmLocation: Powell
Health and wellness technologies have been trending up over the past FIVE years and weve seen growing interest by building owners and occupiers to integrate them into their smart building strategy. As a result of COVID, weve recently seen a tremendous influx of technologies focused on individual health screening and reporting, contact tracing, indoor air quality (IAQ), touchless technologies and surface sanitization, to name a few. Whether they facilitate legitimate COVID mitigation or are merely a costly way to show investment is often questioned. This session showcases COVID technologies weve incorporated here at the conference which represent some of the best in class solutions for building owners, operators and occupiers.

Navigating the Landscape of Connected Sensors: Occupancy, Utilization, IAQ and More
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 10:30 am - 11:15 amLocation: Kierland 1C
First comes a smart building vision; then the plan, network, operating platform, applications and smart devices follows. The idea of connecting everything inside a building has significantly picked up pace over the last few years. Now more than ever, every device has a sensor for its primary function and additional ones expanding their original capabilities. Traditional use cases such as occupancy, utilization, IAQ, temperature, parking and lighting are all taking full advantage of next generation sensors as well as new applications such as structure strength, gunshot detection, weather impact and more. This session examines the traditional ideas and discuss the future benefits and possible liabilities of a fully sensored building, campus or district.

Developing a Data-Driven ESG Strategy: A Building-Focused Approach
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 10:45 am - 11:30 amLocation: Kierland 1B
Buildings account for over 40% of the worlds energy consumption and for a long time have been under the radar of those looking to fight climate change. In the last 15 years, there have been two other movements involving building energy (environmental) efficiency, but the results were questionable. For example, during the pandemic recently, despite a sub 10% occupancy in NYC buildings, energy consumption stayed the same. Many believe that this is the right time and that the built environment is ready to take the challenge seriously. True thought leaders know that data and technology have to play a role. In order to get an old building up to modern environmental standards, well designed solutions will have to be put in place. Gathering data from multiple systems and creating a sound integration strategy is the only way to achieve the desired sustainability objectives. This session brings critical thinking to a long overdue problem.

Accelerated Innovation in Commercial Real Estate: Embracing a Digital-Only Future
Date: 11/3/2021Time: 1:30 pm - 2:00 pmLocation: Kierland 1B
Many real estate firms talk about digital transformation, but the degree of true adoption varies greatly. For some, being digital means getting rid of file cabinets. For the more advanced, it is rethinking every process and developing hyper automation systems to maximize efficiency, enhance experience and deliver unprecedented insight as a result of data consolidation and the use of business tools such as artificial intelligence. Imagine if a real estate firm could reduce each and every process from ten steps down to three, and in some cases, eliminate the process altogether. One such firm, Inland Real Estate, has been on the forefront for years and Sunder Pappu will shed some light on what a digital-only future really looks like for a real estate firm.

OPENING SESSION | Next Level Innovation in the Built Environment: ERP & Smart Buildings Converge
Date: 11/2/2021Location: Kierland 1
There are many possible solutions that can contribute to the creation of a smart building. Property management, leasing, electronic rent payment, maintenance requests, smart entry, self-regulated environmental controls and privacy-sensitive security are some of the functions that establish an automated building. For most of modern history, the ERP or business solutions side did not touch smart building solutions in a meaningful or integrated way. With the advancement of the cloud, open systems, smart edge and IoT devices, the integration of every application into a single framework is inevitable. This segment will feature world leaders from both sides of smart real estate to explore whats next for our industry.
